Better coating additives with RUDOLF solutions

Agent of positive change

High performance additives are used to give the coating system certain properties.

The coating layer on a surface should form a closed film that adheres firmly, withstands environmental influences and produces a uniform, visually appealing appearance. The coating should be easy to apply and dry quickly. To ensure a successful surface coating, the chemical and physical processes of coating formation are controlled by these additives.

In order to meet all these requirements, RUDOLF offers a wide range of wetting and dispersing additives, surface additives, special additives, defoamers, hydrophobizing additives, binders and crosslinkers.

Wetting and dispersing additives

The fine and uniform distribution of the solid pigments in the liquid binder solution is crucial for the production of pigmented coatings. If this process step of pigment trituration does not work perfectly, a number of visible defects can occur in the coating. RUDOLF offers a wide range of products with the RUCOLAC B-200 series to achieve optimum dispersion and wetting of pigments.

Surface additives

Surface defects frequently occur during and after the application of a coating system, which impair the appearance of the coating and affect its protective function.

Essential parameters for all those defects are differences in the surface tension, which lead to the formation of surface defects. To avoid these, RUDOLF offers with the RUCOLAC B-300 series additives, which minimize surface tension differences.

Special additives

The requirements for modern coatings are constantly increasing. With the RUCOLAC B-400 series, RUDOLF offers various functional additives that provide coating systems with additional functions such as extended open time, tannin-blocking properties or a hammer finish effect.

Hydrophobizing additives

With the RUCOLAC B-600 series, RUDOLF offers water-repellent additives that provide optimum protection for all kinds of coatings.

Defoamers

In the coatings industry, solutions against microfoam or macrofoam are usually required. Microfoam occurs mainly in solvent based, solvent-free, but also aqueous formulations with low pigment volume concentration (PVC), while macrofoam is formed more frequently in aqueous systems. Defoamers or deaerators are used to prevent foam formation, whereby defoamers tend to destroy the foam on the surface (macrofoam). In contrast, deaerators accelerate the rising of the air bubble (microfoam) in the wet coating, so that the air bubble can leave the coating before drying. In practice, this distinction is often not possible, which is why the term defoamer is generally used. RUDOLF offers with the RUCOLAC B-500-series a broad range of defoamers based on mineral oil, vegetable oil and silicones.

Binders and crosslinkers

With the RUCOLAC B-700 series RUDOLF offers polyurethane- and silicone resin-based binders and blocked isocyanates, which act as crosslinkers. RUDOLF offers methyl and phenylmethyl silicone resins for particularly heat-resistant coatings. These resins are used for physically drying systems as well as for stoving systems. Typical applications are corrosion protection for exhaust and chimney systems, industrial furnaces or combustion chambers. RUDOLF’s polyurethane dispersions can be used for coatings to achieve very good coverage, high adhesion and, above all, high surface hardness. Coatings are often additionally crosslinked to improve their performance characteristics. For this purpose, RUDOLF offers blocked isocyanates, which can be used as formaldehyde-free crosslinkers for aqueous polymeric dispersions of polyurethanes, polyacrylates or polyvinyl acetates.
